October 7, 2004 — Wayne County 4-H'ers participate in Ak-Sar-Ben Youth Expo at Omaha
The 77th Annual Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Youth Exposition was held Sept. 21-26 at the Qwest Center in Omaha. Six 4-H'ers from Wayne County participated in this event by competing in various livestock areas. Among top award winners were Katie Behmer and Jara Settles. Katie is an 11-year 4-H member in Wayne County and the 18 year-old daughter of Jon and Peg Behmer of Hoskins. She exhibited the Champion Crossbred Feeder Steer at the 2004 Ak-Sar-Ben Show. Katie's feeder steer weighed 480 pounds and had a hip height of 39 inches.
Settles, the 14 year-old daughter of Jerome and Joan Settles of Hoskins was awarded second place honors in the feeder calfshowmanship contest. She received a plaque from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben and a $100 J.L. Thurmond Superior Showman Award.
