OMAHA — Wakefield senior Jordan Metzler capped her high school career in a big way with three medals, highlighted by a second straight state title in the 800-meter run at the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships.
Metzler scored three medals in her final high school performance, starting the weekend with a runner-up finish in the Class C girls 400-meter run. Running out of the Lane 8, she came through with a personal-best time of 57.90 seconds to get the silver medal.
She followed that up Saturday afternoon with an outstanding performance in the 800-meter run. Taking the lead early, she cruised to victory and ran a time of 2:14.53, just missing on the state-record time of 2:14.35 she set a year ago.
Less than an hour after finishing that race, she was back for her final event, coming away with a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.73 seconds. She scored all 20 of the Trojans’ team points as Wakefield tied for ninth overall in the Class C girls race.
Wakefield’s boys also got a meal from sophomore Cael Johnson, who finished third in the 300-meter hurdles on Saturday.
Winside picked up a medal in Class D boys action Saturday as sophomore Caleb Offner posted an eighth-place finish in the boys discus. He just missed on a second medal Friday, placing ninth in the shot put.
LCC’s Tali Erwin just missed making the medal stand in the Class C girls high jump, finishing ninth with a bet mark of 4 feet, 11 inches.
Tri County Northeast’s best effort of the day came from Bre Millard in the 300-meter hurdles and the 400-meter relay foursome of Millard, Shantel Miller, Rachael Bousquet and Kiya Tornez. both finishing 14th.
Wayne’s track and field teams did not score during Class B action in action Wednesday and Thursday. Elle Powicki just missed the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, placing ninth. Mason Ley tied the school record of 13 feet in the pole vault to finish 16th.
