STATE CHAMPIONS -- Wayne boys rally to win Class B bowling title

Posted

What a comeback!!!

The Wayne High bowlers needed to beat York twice in the best-of-5 Baker format finals, and they did it in impressive come-from-behind fashion.

The Blue Devils beat the Dukes in four games to force a winner-take-all rematch, and then Wayne rallied from being down two games to nothing to win the final three games and beat York to win the first Class B title at the Nebraska State High School Bowling Championships in Lincoln Tuesday night.

After opening with tournament wins over Omaha Skutt and Seward, Wayne was bounced to the losers bracket in a four-game loss to York and slipped past Lexington 3-2 to earn a rematch with the Dukes in the double-elimination tournament.

After losing the first game 157-144, Wayne rallied to win the next three (168-106, 187-127, 158-146) to hand York its first loss of the tournament and force a second best-of-five series to determine the state title.

York cruised to a 174-150 win in the first game and came back after giving up a 21-pin deficit to take a 2-0 lead with a 161-156 win.

And then...Wayne turned it on, winning the third game 172-128 and getting four straight strikes from Jaden Dramse, Shayne Geidner, Alex Rodriguez and Calvin Starzl to start the fourth game and cruise to a 213-155 win.

In the final game, Wayne had seven straight marks to start the game and never let York sniff a comeback, finishing with a 176-139 win to take the title.
