The Wayne/Wakefield baseball team made it a two-fer on Monday as they closed out the regular season with a 9-6 win over Thurston-Cuming County in action at Hank Overin Field.
The second game of the day was rescheduled due to rain last week, and the local jumped on the visitors for six runs in the first two innings to take control of the game.
Zane Jackson got things started with an RBI double to left, scoring Isaac Camarena, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Mason Lee, running for Jackson, later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Lutt, Caden Korth followed with a free pass that scored Tucker Nichols, and Noah Braun scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Dean to make it 4-0.
After the visitors scored one in the top of the second, Wayne/Wakefield put up two more as Lutt singled home Camarena and Lee scored on an error. They added another run in the fifth on Micah Sprouls’ sacrifice fly, scoring Korth, and finished it off with two in the sixth on a Braun RBI double and a Lutt sacrifice fly.
Jackson had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack and Lutt had three RBI’s in the win. Four of Wayne/Wakefield’s eight hits went for extra bases, as Camarena, Korth, Jackson and Braun all had doubles. Julio Sanchez pitched five solid innings, striking out five and scattering seven hits to get the win.
In the first game of the day, Wayne/Wakefield scored in the bottom of the first inning, but couldn’t keep the lead late as visiting Arlington came back to post a 5-1 win.
Wayne/Wakefield drew first blood in the first, taking advantage of an Arlington error to bring Brennan O’Reilly home for a 1-0 advantage.
Great pitching by Adam Bentjen and solid defense kept Arlington off the board until the sixth, when they put together back-to-back doubles to score a pair of runs and take the lead. The Eagles added three insurance runs in the seventh to go on to the win.
Braun’s fourth-inning single was the only hit of the game for 2-15 Wayne/Wakefield. Bentjen threw well in a losing effort, allowing just four hits in six innings.
Wayne/Wakefield opens play in the B-6 district tournament at Orval Smith Field in Ralston on Friday at 5 p.m., taking on GACC/Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer in a 5 p.m. matchup.
