The offense was clicking for much of the day for the Wayne High softball team, which finished 1-2 against Class A and Class B competition in the Lincoln Public Schools Classic at Doris Bair Park.
Wayne opened with a wild one against Ralston, hitting four home runs in the game before losing an extra-inning affair to the Rams, 10-9 in eight innings.
Kennedy Maly hit the first of her three home runs in the opening inning, taking a 2-2 pitch over the wall to center field. Annie Kniesche added an RBI later in the inning on a groundout, scoring Jenna Trenhaile, who followed Maly’s homer wiht a double.
Wayne made it 3-0 in the second when Kiara Hochstein scored Ashten Gibson with a single, and after Ralston came back to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth, Maly hit her second homer of the game, this time taking a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left to make it 4-4.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth, with Hochstein scoring on a Kniesche single in the sixth, and after Ralston scored two in the seventh to take the lead again, Tori Kniesche delivered a two-run blast to center to tie the game at 2-2 and send the game into extra innings.
Ralston scored three in the eighth to take the lead, but Maly cranked her third round-tripper of the game with a two-run shot to get Wayne within a run before Ralston held on for the win.
Maly finished 3-for-5 with three home runs and four RBI’s. Ashten Gibson and Jenna Trenhaile each had two hits and Annie Kniesche and Tori Kniesche each had two RBI’s. Tori Kniesche took the loss in relief of Hannah Belt.
In their second game of the day, Fremont scored five runs in the third inning and held on late for a 6-5 win over the Blue Devils.
Wayne got on the board in the second when Jamie Gamble scored on a Kortney Keller single, but Fremont came back with five runs in the third to take the lead for good. Wayne made it interesting with two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Sydney Biggerstaff had an RBI single and Trenhaile scored on an error in the fifth, while Keller had an RBI double and Gamble scored on an error in the sixth.
Gamble and Keller each had two hits to lead the offensive effort for Wayne. Gibson was credited with the loss.
In their final game, Wayne pulled away late to post a 7-3 win over Wahoo and improve to 5-3 on the season.
Wayne got two runs in the first inning to take the lead for good. Biggerstaff scored Maly with a groundout, while Gamble had an RBI single to bring home Trenhaile.
Wayne got another run in the third on a Biggerstaff RBI double, then plated another run in the sixth on a Keller sacrifice fly before putting the game out of reach with three in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Biggerstaff and a wild pitch that scored Biggerstaff later in the inning.
Trenhaile had three hits and Biggerstaff and Gamble each had two hits to lead a 10-hit attack. Biggerstaff finished with three RBI’s in the game. Tori Kniesche got her first varsity win, throwing five innings.
Wayne is back in action Tuesday at home against Highway 91. Varsity action starts at 6:30 p.m.
