Trojan volleyball is under new leadership this year

Following the graduation of a key position, the Wakefield volleyball program has been busy at work preparing for the fall campaign.

The Trojans will have 28 girls on the high school roster with eight upperclassmen.

Heidi Brown will be a first year head coach but has been a volunteer coach with Wakefield volleyball and working with the setters the past four years along with assisting with the youth programs.

Coach Brown said following their scrimmage and jamboree with Winside they were good matches to get a lot of new faces on the court.

“We have tried a handful of rotations already through our camps and open gyms,” said Brown. “We feel pretty good about where we are now, but like I said we need some of the girls to break out of their shell a little and own their role.”

Wakefield volleyball is also continuing their weight program lifting twice a week.

Tory McCreary and Samantha Dorcey will assist coach Brown.

Over the summer, Wakefield volleyball put in the work during lifting and conditioning. Coach Brown was pleased with the attendance in the weight room and open gyms.

Alli Brown, Isabella Andrade, Jazmin Paredes and McKinnley Mogus will be the four seniors this season.

Alli Brown is a returning outside hitter who played all six rotations last year.

Coach Brown also highlighted additional players.

“Boston Brown is a sophomore this year, she is another player we need her to have a breakout season this year,” Brown added. “We have a couple others that are taking over some key roles on our team. Ashlyn Riewer seems to be fitting into the libero position for us and she’s really taking some ownership over that role.”

An outside hitter who played all six rotations, a four-year setter and libero are key positions which will need to be filled.

Coach Brown mentioned the team wrote down goals during their two-a-days last week and highlighted joining the East Husker Conference.

“I think we want to maintain a strong winning record,” Brown mentioned. “That seems to be on all the girls cards. We want to finish in the top half of our new conference because it’s the first year we’ve been in the East Husker Conference and play with confidence.”

The entire Wakefield volleyball team came up with six words for their mantra for the season. They include Focus, Attitude, Drive, Unity, Purpose and Confidence.

Wakefield volleyball will open their regular season on Thursday, Aug. 29 hosting Plainview. A trio of matches will start with the C-Team outing at 5:30 p.m., followed by JV and varsity.
