Here are Saturday’s Wayne State sports highlights:
Soccer team improves to 4-0-1 – Madison Burgard scored in the 68th minute for the lone goal of the game to give Wayne State a 1-0 win at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. Burgard scored on an assist from Suenly Galvez to keep the Wildcats unbeaten on the season at 4-0-1 (1-0-1 NSIC). Kylie Comba got her third shutout of the season, recording five saves. The Wildcats were to play at Minot State on Sunday.
No. 2 Wildcats fall to No. 4 Mustangs – In a matchup of top-five teams Saturday at Rice Auditorium, fourth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State handed the second-ranked Wildcats their first loss of the season with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 decision. The first set was tight with seven ties and four lead changes before the Mustangs took the early advantage. They led the entire second set, then held off a Wayne State rally in the third to finish the sweep. Michaela Mestl had 10 kills and nine digs to lead the Wildcats, making her the ninth player in school history to record 1,500 career digs. Alyssa Frauendorfer had nine klls and Erin Gross had seven. Natalie Vondrak had 40 digs, while Megan Gabhardt had 29 assists. Wayne State, 8-1 (0-1 NSIC) will be on the road Tuesday, visiting No. 20 Augustana in a 7 p.m. contest.
Bemidji State handles Wildcats in 45-17 win – No. 24-ranked Bemidji State scored on four of their first five possessions to build a big lead early and cruise to a 45-17 win over Wayne State in NSIC action Saturday in Bemidji, Minn. The Beavers built a 24-0 lead in the first half before Wayne State scored on a short pass from Nate Osborn to Keaton Slaughter. Bemidji answered with another score and led 31-10 at the half on their way to the big win. Rashad Trimble rushed for 64 yards on 16 carries to lead the Wildcat ground attack. Osborn was 24-of-47 for 236 with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Zach Glidden led the receivers with seven grabs for 54 yards. Cam Montgomery led the defense with 10 tackles and three interceptions, the first since Lamont Lewis in 1984 to record three interceptions in the same game. Wayne State, 0-3 will be at home next weekend, hosting 1-2 St. Cloud State in a 1 p.m. contest Saturday at Bob Cunningham Field.
