Here is an update of Saturday’s Wayne State athletics:
Football team wins big at Concordia-St. Paul – The Wildcats scored 24 points off Concordia-St. Paul turnovers to blow out the Golden Bears 45-10 Saturday in St. Paul, Minn. Wayne State led from start to finish, taking the opening drive 75 yards in 11 plays and finishing with a 22-yard pass from Zach Osborn to Shymere Williams. Two CSP turnovers led to scores for the Wildcats in the second period to help them to a 17-3 halftime lead, and they scored on four straight possessions in the second half to nail down their second straight win. Osborn threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns on the day. Williams had six catches for 160 yards and two scores and Rashad Trimble rushed for 94 yards on 27 carries. Wayne State hosts No. 25 Augustana for homecoming next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cunningham Field.
Volleyball team cruises to straight-set victory – Three Wildcats had double figures in kills as No. 9 Wayne State cruised to a 25-20, 25-12, 25-22 win over University of Mary at Rice Auditorium. Wayne State hit .321 for the match and had just nine attack errors in the contests. Alyssa Frauendorfer had 12 kills and became the 13th player in school history to reach 1,200 career kills. Alex Opperman tied her career best with 11 kills and hit at a .647 attack percentage, while Erin Gross had a career-high 10 kills and hit .471 in the match. Michaela Mestl had 16 digs and Megan Gebhardt had 36 assists. Wayne State hosts Chadron State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for Black Out/Pack The House Night at Rice Auditorium.
Soccer girls get 3-2 win at home – The Wayne State soccer team continued to be the surprise of the NSIC so far this season after they came from two goals down in the first half and beat Northern State in overtime, 3-2, to improve to 5-2-2 overall (2-2-2 NSIC). Northern had a 2-0 lead 35 minutes into the game, but Wayne State answered with an Alexis Strothers goal at the 35:30 mark to make it 2-1 at intermission. Wayne State tied the match when Carys Hund scored in the second minute to make it 2-2, and the game stayed tied until the second overtime period, when Brooke Buzzell headed home the game-winner on an assist from Jennifer Zick in the first minute of the final extra period. Wayne State is home Sunday to host MSU Moorhead in a 1 p.m. matchup.
