On Tuesday, the Wayne State baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Sioux Falls, dropping the opener 5-1 before coming back to win the nightcap 12-5.
In the first game, the Cougars' Dylan Gavin limited the Wildcats to one run on six hits over five innings, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning to overcome his only serious threat of the game.
Sioux Falls used three hits to score three runs in the third inning to take the lead for good. Wayne State got its lone run in the fifth when Albert Johnson singled home Aaron Krier. Sioux Falls added two insurance runs in the sixth to go on to the win, as Taner Ledezma took the loss.
The second game was scoreless until the fifth when Wayne State erupted for seven runs. Run-scoring singles by Cody Jenkins, Nick McIntee and Alex Kreft helped fuel the rally, and Wayne State extended the lead to 9-0 in the sixth while taking advantage of a USF error to score two runs.
Jenkins went 3-for-6 with two RBI's to lead a 14-hit attack in the nightcap. Johnson was 2-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to a season-high 17 games. He scored three times in the win. Teague McFadden got the win with seven solid innings, scattering eight hits and striking out three.
Wayne State (9-24, 6-12 NSIC) hosts Southwest Minnesota State in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. Doubleheaders start at 1:30 p.m Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
