Blue Devils fall behind early, unable to comeback at Pierce during high-scoring fourth

Wayne High football was on the road for a week seven district outing.

From Pierce, the Blue Devils visited the Bluejays Friday night.

Despite a 300+ yard passing performance by senior quarterback Kaden Keller from Wayne, Pierce built their lead early and held onto the 41-21 victory to improve to 3-4. Wayne High fell to 1-6.

Pierce scored twice in the first quarter to lead 14-0.

Wayne High was able to put points on the board in the second quarter thanks to a five-yard rushing touchdown from Taven Ocampo.

The Bluejays also scored to hold a 21-7 advantage at the halftime break.

Pierce added to their lead of 27-7 going into the fourth before a wild fourth quarter combined for 28 points.

Wayne High touchdowns came from Kaden Keller on passing scores of 12 yards to Alex Rodriguez and 17 yards to Calvin Ankeny.

Pierce also scored twice.

Final favored Pierce winning 41-21.

Keller was 24-52 for 311 yards with two passing touchdowns and also ran the ball three times for 12 yards.

Rodriguez caught 11 passes for 134 yards and one score as Ankeny added 102 yards on seven receptions and one score. Junior Jace Jorgensen tallied five catches for 70 yards.

Ocampo led the Blue Devil rushing attack with 35 yards on 13 carries with one score as senior Will Leseberg followed with five rushes for 29 yards.

Defensively, Wayne was led by Ankeny (seven solo) and junior Brodey Munter (four solo) both with eight tackles. Leseberg tacked on six solo stops. A tackle for loss came from Ocampo who had five tackles (three solo) as Rodriguez recorded an interception with his one solo tackle.

Wayne High finished with 395 yards on 80 plays (311 passing/84 rushing) while Pierce ran 60 plays for a total of 343 yards (70 passing/273 rushing). The Blue Devils went 6-14 on third down and 1-6 on fourth down as Pierce converted 4-8 on third down and 1-2 on fourth down.

The Wayne High football team will next host Schuyler on Friday, Oct. 18.
