Wayne boys win Mid State title with four medalists, Blue Devil girls place third with two medalists

Following a week off from competition, the Wayne High girls and boys cross country program was back in action among fellow conference runners.

From Evergreen Hill Golf Course in Battle Creek, the Blue Devils joined five other girls teams and six other boys teams during the Mid State Conference race on Thursday.

The Wayne High girls finished third with 42 points while the Blue Devil boys won their division with 25 points.

In the girls division, Crofton won the Mid State Conference team standings with 26 points, Boone Central followed in runner-up (37), Wayne took third (42), Pierce placed fourth (49) and O’Neill rounded out the top five teams with 95 points.

The Wayne High girls were led by junior Lilyan Hurner in eighth place during a time of 22:35.31 as senior Olivia Hanson earned an 11th place medal in a time of 22:56.17. Senior Yama Kantai just missed out on a medal finishing 16th (23:51.05).

Other Blue Devil results came from junior Kennasyn Blecke (18th – 24:08.25), senior Norah Armstrong (24th – 24:47.22), junior Josie Ley (25th – 24:59.46) and freshman Hannah Brogren (27th – 25:26.22).

Sophomore Ava Brennan from Ponca was crowned Mid State Conference girls champion in a time of 20:29.57 on the 5,000-meter course among the 44 runners.

During the boys division, Wayne won the Mid State Conference team standings with 25 points, Norfolk Catholic followed in runner-up (36), Battle Creek took third (47), O’Neill placed fourth (66) and Pierce rounded out the top five teams with 97 points.

The Wayne High boys were led by a third place medal from junior Drew Miller in a time of 17:53.97, senior Gavin Redden followed in fourth during a time of 17:58.89, sophomore Emmanuel Gonzalez took sixth in 18:08.12 as senior Kasen York took the last medal spot in 15th (18:55.55). Just missing out on a medal was junior Boden Dobbins in 16th (19:04.64).

Other Blue Devil results came from sophomore Landen Clausen (18th – 19:04.81), sophomore Camden Hall (19th – 19:06.38), sophomore Lance Brink (38th – 20:36.46), freshman Grady Maas (39th – 20:46.41), sophomore Ben Haschke (44th – 21:29.73), freshman Hudson Rubendall (68th – 24:52.68), sophomore Julian Garcia (71st – 25:39.09) and sophomore Cale Eischeid (72nd – 25:57.75).

Sophomore Miles Clausen from Battle Creek was crowned Mid State Conference boys champion in a time of 17:21.7 on the 5,000-meter course among the 80 runners.

The Wayne High girls and boys cross country program will next compete on Thursday, Oct. 17 during the C-3 District race hosted by Boone Central from the Albion Country Club. The boys race will start at 4:30 p.m. with the girls to follow.
