Blue Devils finish fourth during Adams Central Invite

A trio of games took over the Saturday schedule for Wayne High softball.

From the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings, Wayne competed in the Adams Central Tournament.

The Blue Devils opened with a 12-0 victory over Highway 6, followed by an 11-1 loss against Kearney Catholic and finished fourth after dropping a 15-6 decision against Gering in the third place game.

WHS is now 15-8 on the season.

Kinnley McGuire posted a team-high five hits and four RBI followed by Nyla Bolles (HR/two doubles), Sammi Gubbels and Reagan McGuire all with four hits. Bolles scored a team-high five runs.

Sammi Gubbels (101 pitches) worked five and two-thirds in two starts going 1-1. She allowed 10 runs (three earned) off 11 hits while striking out eight and walking three. Jordyn Gamble (123) appeared in two games of relief allowing 10 runs (nine earned) off nine hits while striking out and walking six batters each. Mackenzie Nissen (26) suffered a loss in the third start allowing six earned runs off three hits while walking three batters and hitting one.

In the win over Highway 6 (Holdrege, Adams Central, Minden), Wayne scored early and often starting with a five-run first inning. WHS also added four runs in the second and three more runs in the third to win 12-0. The Blue Devils outhit HWY 6, 12-4 who committed four errors while Wayne had zero.

Nyla Bolles doubled twice and scored three times; Sammi Gubbels singled twice and drove in three runs; Reagan McGuire singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice as Kinnley McGuire singled twice and drove in two runs.

Rylin Hall singled and scored three times; Lilly Johnson singled and drove in two runs; Mackenzie Nissen singled, drove in two runs and scored as Jordyn Gamble singled and scored.

Sammi Gubbels (50 pitches) picked up the complete game shutout victory in three innings allowing four hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

  During the loss against Kearney Catholic, the Stars began with a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Following a scoreless second, Kearney Catholic scored eight runs in the third and scored once more in the fourth. Final favored Kearney Catholic winning 11-1 and also won the hit department, 8-7. Wayne recorded three errors compared to two by the Stars.

Bolles finished with a solo homerun and also singled.

Rylin Hall, Reagan McGuire, Jordyn Gamble, Kinnley McGuire and Lilly Johnson all singled.

Sammi Gubbels (51) suffered the loss in two and two-third innings allowing 10 runs (three earned) off seven hits while striking out four batters and walking one. Gamble (26) worked an inning and a third allowing one run off one hit while striking out two batters and walking one.

From the loss with Gering, Gering started strong with an 8-3 lead in the first before adding five runs in the second inning. WHS cut into the deficit with a three-run third but Gering added two more runs in the fourth to win 15-6. Gering outhit Wayne, 11-8 who committed three errors compared to zero by Gering.

Kinnley McGuire singled twice, drove in two runs and scored; Sammi Gubbels singled twice as Lily Gubbels doubled and drove in a run.

Mackenzie Nissen singled, drove in a run and scored; Reagan McGuire singled and scored; Lilly Johnson singled and drove in a run; Hall accounted for a RBI and run scored as Bolles scored.

Nissen (26 pitches) suffered the loss not recording an out allowing six earned runs off three hits while walking three batters and hitting one. Gamble (97) worked four innings allowing nine earned runs off eight hits while striking out four batters and walking five.
