Wayne High competes among class C best during UNK cross country invite

With state cross country less than a month away, a mini-state meet was put on full display to open the week.

From the Kearney Country Club, Wayne High ran in the afternoon session representing Class C girls and boys on Monday during the UNK meet.

The Wayne High girls finished 11th out of 30 teams with 213 points while the Blue Devil boys took seventh with 158 points among the 36 teams.

In the Class C girls division, Columbus Scotus won the team standings with 58 points, Auburn followed in runner-up (61), Minden took third (88), Aurora placed fourth (114) and Gothenburg rounded out the top five teams with 130 points.

The Wayne High girls were led by sophomore Essynce Owens-Webb in 32nd place during a time of 22:27.4 while junior Lilyan Hurner followed in 47th in a time of 22:51.2.

Other results came from senior Olivia Hanson (65th – 23:24.4), senior Norah Armstrong (84th – 23:55.3), junior Josie Ley (104th – 24:26.4), junior Kennasyn Blecke (109th – 24:35.1) and senior Yama Kantai (134th – 25:20.5).

Senior Hailey O’Daniel from Arlington won the girls 3,000-meter race in a time of 19:53.1 among the  204 runners.

During the Class C boys division, Gothenburg won the team standings with 55 points, Aurora followed in runner-up (98), Syracuse took third (105), Holdrege placed fourth (133) and Minden rounded out the top five teams with 148 points.

The Wayne High boys were led by senior Gavin Redden in 13th place in a time of 17:39.7 while junior Drew Miller followed in 33rd in a time of 18:23.9.

Other results came from sophomore Emmanuel Gonzalez (38th – 18:28.9), senior Kasen York (75th – 19:27.3), sophomore Landen Claussen (84th – 19:34.2), sophomore Camden Hall (89th – 19:40.7), junior Boden Dobbins (110th – 20:11.1), freshman Grady Maas (151st – 21:05.4) and sophomore Lance Brink (155th – 21:10.9).

Sophomore Tyler Hetz from Gothenburg won the boys 3,000-meter race in a time of 16:39.8 among the 275 runners.
