Commissioners get update on legislation, projects

A relatively light agenda greeted the board when the Wayne County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday.

Commissioners first heard an update from Elaine Menzel, an attorney for the Nebraska Association of County Officials (NACO). Menzel told the commissioners there are five employees in her office and "the goal is to attend meetings in all counties."

She gave updates on a variety of events her office is responsible for, including an upcoming webinar and workshops for the different offices within the courthouse. She encouraged the commissioners to attend an October conference in Kearney and the NACO Conference Dec. 18-20, also in Kearney.

Menzel discussed the recently completed legislative session and the biennium budget bill currently being discussed, including possible cuts to various programs.

Kyle Huff, Wayne County Highway Superintendent presented a utility permit application for the burial of cable in the county's right-of-way. The area in question is near Wakefield on 858th Road, near the county line.

Commissioners approved the request, pending approval by the Dixon County Commissioners.

The final item on the agenda included information from Pat Brentlinger, Wayne County Maintenance Director, on an upgrade to the computer system that regulates the courthouse heating and cooling system.

The county has a service agreement with Trane, the company that provides the equipment, but the computer software and hardware that operate  the system  can't be updated and parts are unavailable.

The proposal to upgrade the system would  cost $14,450.

Brentlinger told the commissioners  that "Trane has been really good to work with" and recommended the upgrade.

Commissioners voted 2-1 in favor of the proposal, with Commissioner Terry Sievers voting against, noting that he would have liked more time to look at the proposal before making a decision.

Wayne County Board of Commissioners will next meet in regular session on Tuesday, July 15 at 9 a.m. in the Wayne County courtroom.
