Commissioners get update on variety of items

An update on economic development activities throughout Wayne County was presented during Tuesday's meeting of the Wayne County Commissioners.

Luke Virgil, Director of Economic Development for Wayne America, Inc. shared information on business growth, tourism, housing and the Wayne America team to the commissioners as part of an annual report.

Virgil talked about changes in ownership for a number of businesses in Wayne, as well as a partnership involving the sale of a building and the purchase of a building that currently houses Wayne Auto Parts.

He noted that the process of making these transactions has taken several years as "projects never happen quickly."

Virgil also listed a number of activities throughout the county that the Wayne America office is promoting and noted the work being done to highlight activities in Winside and Carroll.

Approval was given to sell a county-owned vehicle through Big Iron. The county is currently purchasing a new vehicle and Commissioner Terry Sievers asked about what the commissioners felt was the best method of getting rid of the old vehicle.

Commissioners got an update on the progress of a new shop for Jim Rabe's district.

Highway Superintendent Kyle Huff told the commissioners the village of Winside would like to do a property swap to help square off the property both the village and county own. Additional work will be done on this plan in coming weeks.

Work on the water line into the courthouse and sheriff's office was scheduled to be completed this week. Most of work was to take place on June 19, as the courthouse was to be closed for the Juneteenth holiday.

County Assessor Dawn Duffy and Emergency Manager Nic Kemnitz spoke to the council on a contract with Eagleview for pictometry mapping for the county.

Duffy said the fly-over generally take place in early spring for the most detailed photos and is done every other year.

All departments within the county, as well as the city of Wayne and other entities, such as fire departments are able to benefit from the work done by the firm.

Commissioner Terry Sievers said "it is a great tool for everyone."

Wayne County was the recipient of a more than $23,000 cyber security grant from NEMA. The money will be used for cyber security upgrades for the county.

An executive session was held to discuss property in District 2 in Carroll.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will next meet in regular session on Tuesday, July 7 at 9 a.m. in the Wayne County courtroom.
