No. 2 Wildcats block their way to straight-set win

The second-ranked Wayne State volleyball team had a season-high 15 blocks and hit at a .343 clip to easily take care of Sioux Falls in the Northern Sun Conference opener for both teams Thursday, winning in Sioux Falls, 25-13, 25-20, 25-17.
Nine of the Wildcats’ 15 blocks came in the opening set, as the Wildcats were dominant at the net with 13 kills and no errors in 28 attempts. Natalie Vondrak had five kills and Alyssa Frauendorfer added four in the opening run.
Wayne State dominated from there, jumping out to a 10-3 lead in the first set and coming back from an early deficit to take the third set and win the match for their ninth straight-set win of the season.
Fraendorfer led the team with 13 kills and hit at a .600 attack percentage, while Vondrak added 12 kills and hit .355. Alex Opperman was a blocking machine, recording a career-high nine blocks while Erin Gross added five.
Megan Gebhard had 30 assists in the match, and Haley Kauth had 17 digs while Michaela Mestl added 13 to lead the defense.
The Wildcats are 9-0 on the season and have a huge matchup Saturday, hosting No. 4-ranked Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m. at Rice Auditorium.
