High school musicians from across Nebraska gathered at Lincoln Northwest High School on Feb. 1 for the first ever Patriots of the Plains Honor Band, an event sponsored by the Nebraska National Guard.
This unique honor band, open to students in grades 9-12, provided an enriching and collaborative experience as young musicians played alongside members of The 43rd Army Band.
Among those who are part of the band is Joselyn Saltzman, a sophomore at Wayne High School.
Throughout the day, students participated in rehearsals led by professional military musicians, honing their skills and preparing for an inspiring evening concert. The performance featured a patriotic and dynamic program, including The Star-Spangled Banner, Children's March, Glaciers, Travelin’ Music, and the rousing finale, The Stars and Stripes Forever.
"For students, this was an opportunity to learn from seasoned performers, while also gaining a deeper appreciation for the role of military musicians. The event not only highlighted the talents of Nebraska’s young musicians but also strengthened the connection between music and service," said Wayne High Band instructor Alex Wieland.
A total of 350 students applied to participate in The Patriots of the Plains Honor Band; however, only 97 were at the actual event.
"With another successful event in the books, organizers hope to see even more students take part in future years," Wieland added.
