Last-second trey lifts Wayne past HCC, 32-31

The Wayne boys and Pierce girls claimed the championship trophies Thursday in the Elkhorn Valley Bank Northeast Nebraska Shootout.

In the girls championship at Rice Auditorium, Pierce pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 50-42 win over Auburn.

The boys first-place matchup went down to the final seconds, with the Blue Devils edging Hartington Cedar Catholic 32-31.

Consolation winners included the Wayne girls and Auburn boys. The Pender girls and LCC boys finished fifth, while Homer’s girls and Homer’s boys took home seventh-place honors.

Thursday’s results are as follows:

Girls 7th place
Homer 64, Winnebago 49 — Four Lady Knights scored in double figures as Homer was able to outlast Winnebago. Hannah Elsea led the way with 18 points, followed by Tori Walker with 14, Brandie Johnson with 13 and Rylie Harris with 11. Amani Means led all scorers with 22 points, while Sylvia Valentino had 11 for the Indians.

Homer 31, Pender 29 — Homer came back from an eight-point halftime deficit and pulled out a win for seventh-place honors. Austin Baker and Hayden Overgaard each had seven points for the winners. Alex Roth paced Pender with a game-high 11 points.

Pender 64, LCC 43 — Pender led by as many as 32 points on their way to an easy win in the girls’ fifth-place matchup. Avery Wegner led a balanced Pendragon attack with 14 points while Lillie Timm added 10. LCC’s Kinsey Hall led all scorers with 15 points while Mallory Eriksen added 14.

LCC 64, Winnebago 59 — The Bears outlasted the Indians in a close battle for fifth place, getting a game-high 26 points from Jake Rath. Evan Haisch added 12 points for LCC. Dyami Berridge scored 19 points, Javon Price added 17 and Duran Blackfish put in 14 for Winnebago.

Wayne 41, Hartington CC 36 — The Trojans were within one with a minute to go, but Frankie Klausen hit four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win for the Blue Devils. Klausen had 16 points and Brooklyn Kruse added 14 for the winners. Makenna Noecker led Cedar Catholic with a game-high 17 points and Laney Kathol added 11.

Auburn 42, Pierce 33 — Auburn bounced back from a six-overtime loss the day before with a solid second half to take third-place honors. Skyler Roybal and Maverick Binder both had 12 points to lead the Bulldogs. Ben Brahmer had a game-high 13 points and Abram Scholting added 10 for the Bluejays.

Pierce 50, Auburn 42 — Pierce used a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter and came away with the tournament championship. Payton Simmons led a balanced Bluejay attack with 13 points and Morgan Moeller added 11. Auburn was led by Olivia Swanson with 13 points and Jaleigh Darnell with 12.

Boys Championship
Wayne 32, Hartington CC 31 — Brandon Bartos hit a 3-pointer with :05 left to break a 29-29 tie and give Wayne the tournament championship. Cedar just missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds that would have forced overtime one day after they won a six-overtime thriller, and the outback as time expired left them a point short. Bartos score 12 points to lead Wayne. Jaxson Bernecker and Carson Ahrens both had eight points for the Trojans.
