Wayne State College music majors Josie Mikoloyck of Scottsbluff and Dalton Hazel of Bellevue are two of 124 college students from across the country chosen to participate in the National Small Band Program’s Intercollegiate Band from March 26-29 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Intercollegiate Band provides students from small institutions and music programs an opportunity to participate in a large, high-quality performing ensemble during the National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). Only students attending a college, university, or post-secondary institution with enrollment of 5,000 or fewer students, or institutions with developing band programs are eligible.

Dr. Josh Calkin, director of bands at Wayne State, nominated Mikoloyck and Hazel based on musical ability, character, and work ethic. The CBDNA board reviews all nominations, selects candidates, and reviews auditions for chair placements.

Mikoloyck is majoring in Music Education and Clarinet Performance at Wayne State, and her instrument of choice is the bass clarinet. “I was very excited to be selected,” she said. “I am practicing to get the part under my fingers and know how to play with the ensemble.”

Hazel’s instrument of choice is the tuba, which he has played since sixth grade.

“I was deeply surprised and honored to receive this recognition,” said Hazel, who is also majoring in Music Education. “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to gain valuable experiences and knowledge through Wayne State. I am diligently practicing the music to comprehend how my part integrates into the ensemble.”

Mikoloyck and Hazel plan to network with peers and directors at the conference, as well as gain insight into effective ensemble teaching. Both are anticipated to graduate in December 2025, and their goals include teaching, graduate school, and continued ensemble involvement.

“The diverse range of musical experiences at Wayne State has equipped me with invaluable skills that will undoubtedly enhance my ability to serve as an effective educator,” said Hazel.

Mikoloyck echoed Hazel’s sentiments.

“My Wayne State experience has been fantastic,” adds Mikoloyck. “I believe I am the person and musician I am today because of Wayne State.”
