Wayne High shines during home cross country invite

Local support was in full force during a home Wayne High cross country invitational to open the week.

From the Wayne Country Club, the Wayne Invite showcased five girls teams and six boys programs on Monday.

The Wayne High girls finished first with 24 points while the Blue Devil boys also won their division with 19 points.

In the girls division, WHS won their home invite with 24 points, Pierce followed in runner-up (41), Laurel-Concord-Coleridge took third (45), Hartington placed fourth (55) and Tri County Northeast rounded out the five complete teams with 79 points.

The Wayne High varsity girls were led by sophomore Essynce Owens-Webb in third with a time of 21:49.94 as junior Lilyan Hurner followed in sixth (22:27.30).

Others included senior Olivia Hanson (14th – 23:47.11), senior Yama Kantai (15th – 24:08.14), junior Kennasyn Blecke (18th – 24:40.4), junior Josie Ley (22nd – 25:01.29), senior Norah Armstrong (25th – 26:15), freshman Hannah Brogren (26th – 26:29.12) and Anna Naeve (45th – 35:52.35).

The top individual runner was senior Zoey Ebmeier from Pierce in a time of 20:56.9 among the 45 runners who finished the 5K course.

LCC was led by sophomore Faith Galvin in 12th (23:25.82).

In the Junior High girls division, Wayne recorded 10 points to place first among the four teams. Norfolk Catholic followed with 19 points.

Wayne’s eighth grader Tayla Hurner won the 3K race in a time of 12:23.34 among the 38 runners who finished. Seventh grader Hadley Dunklau followed in fourth (13:20.03), eighth grader Elizabeth Hix finished sixth (13:37.32) as seventh grader Sarah Kuchta took ninth (14:25.08).

Other results came from all seventh graders Rose Kaup (15:53.72), Alyssa Bargholz (15th – 16:02.36), Pashynce Owens-Webb (17th – 16:44.81), Lucy Ocampo (21st – 17:14.53) and Molly Allemann (34th – 19:40.22).

In the boys division, Wayne won the Wayne Invite with 19 points, Norfolk Catholic followed in runner-up (34), Pierce took third (56), Winnebago placed fourth (71) and Hartington rounded out the top five teams with 82 points. LCC was the sixth place team with 84 points.

The Wayne High varsity boys were led by junior Drew Miller in second with a time of 17:52.47, senior Gavin Redden followed in third (18:01.37), sophomore Emmanuel Gonzalez placed seventh (18:44.1) and senior Kasen York took ninth (18:51.26).

Other results came from sophomore Landen Claussen (14th – 19:38.22), junior Boden Dobbins (15th – 19:40.87), sophomore Camden Hall (16th – 19:42.41), sophomore Gabriel Armstrong (27th – 20:55.38), sophomore Lance Brink (28th – 20:55.41), freshman Grady Maas (31st – 21:06.65), sophomore Ben Haschke (39th – 22:25.49), freshman Hudson Rubendall (48th – 24:17.49), freshman Ethan Samuelson (49th – 24:22.83), sophomore Cale Eischeid (55th – 25:44.88) and sophomore Julian Garcia (56th – 25:48.82)

The top individual runner was sophomore Kendall Shada from Pierce in a time of 17:42.65 among the 65 runners who finished the 5K course.

LCC was led by senior Preston Rose in 12th (19:36.87).

In the Junior High boys division, Wayne secured a third place team finish with 23 points. Norfolk Catholic was first with seven points.

Wayne was led by seventh grader Benjamin Patefield taking sixth in a time of 13:01.67, followed by eighth grader Jacob Fehringer (seventh – 13:05.83) and fellow eighth grader Daniel Kuchta (10th – 13:42.01).

Other results came from eighth grader Isaiah Zarate (19th – 15:19.02), seventh grader Tristen Klinetobe (21st – 15:19.18), eighth grader Quinten Kuester (23rd – 15:32.41) and seventh grader Owen Wynia (31st – 17:30.18).

Eighth grader Teddy Haake from Norfolk Catholic won the 3K race in a time of 11:53.14 among the 43 runners who finished.

The Wayne High girls and boys cross country program will be off until Thursday, Sept. 26 during the Crofton Invite.
