Wayne softball goes 1-2 during Mercy Tournament, drops third game in extras

From Crown and Wagner fields in Ralston on Saturday, the Blue Devils opened against North Bend and Yutan in pool play before taking part in a third outing later in the afternoon.

Wayne High began the afternoon with a 10-0 victory over North Bend before suffering a 5-4 loss with Yutan. The Blue Devils also suffered a 7-3 loss in eight innings against the host Mercy. WHS is now 8-4 on the season.

Nyla Bolles posted a team-high five hits and four runs scored for Wayne in the three games while Lily Gubbles led the team in RBI with five. Sammi Gubbels (179 pitches) pitched 12 of the 18 innings going 1-1, allowing six runs (one earned) off 17 hits while striking out 12 batters and walking three. Mackenzie Nissen (103) worked six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) off six hits while striking out two batters and walking six.

In the victory over North Bend Central, Wayne scored a run in the first inning followed by a three-run second inning to lead 4-0. The Blue Devils added two runs in the third and posted a four-run fourth to win 10-0 in four innings. Wayne outhit North Bend, 10-6 and committed zero errors compared to four by the Tigers.

Lily Gubbels doubled and drove in four runs; Reagan McGuire singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored; Sammi Gubbels singled and doubled; Nyla Bolles singled twice and scored twice as Lilly Johnson singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice.

Rylin Hall singled, drove in a run and scored as Jordyn Gamble scored.

Sammi Gubbels (67 pitches) picked up the complete game scoreless victory in four innings allowing six hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

From the loss with Yutan, the Blue Devils took the early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Yutan scored once in the top of the second which was answered by Wayne in the home half of the third to lead 4-1. Following a scoreless fourth, Yutan recorded a four-run fifth as neither team scored in the sixth. Final favored Yutan winning 5-4 despite being outhit, 7-6. Yutan committed five errors as Wayne had one error.

Hall singled, doubled and scored as Reagan McGuire doubled and scored.

Sammi Gubbels and Gamble both singled and drove in a run; Kinnley McGuire and Lilly Johnson both singled; Lily Gubbels accounted for a RBI as Bolles scored.

Mackenzie Nissen (103 pitches) suffered the complete game loss in six innings allowing five runs (three earned) off six hits while striking out two batters and walking six.

During the loss against Mercy, neither team scored the first two innings followed by single runs in the third and fourth innings by Wayne to lead 2-0. Mercy answered with two runs in the fifth. Both teams were scoreless in the sixth and seventh to enter extra innings tied at 2-2. Mercy started the eighth by scoring five runs as Wayne only scored one run. Final favored Mercy winning 7-3 in eight innings and outhitting WHS, 11-7. Wayne committed five errors compared to three by Mercy.

Bolles singled three times and scored while Kinnley McGuire and Courtney Roeber both singled and scored.

Sammi Gubbels singled and drove in a run; Hall singled as Mackenzie Nissen and Lilly Johnson both accounted for a RBI.

Sammi Gubbels (112) suffered the complete game loss in eight innings allowing seven runs (two earned) off 11 hits while striking out eight batters and walking one.
