A second straight Thursday highlighted Wayne Junior High girls and boys track & field.
From West Point, Wayne eighth and seventh graders were listed among nine other Junior High programs during the West Point-Beemer Junior High Invite on April 17.
The Wayne junior high eighth grade girls took second with 77 points as the seventh grade girls finished third with 87 points while the Blue Devil junior high eighth grade boys won their division with 94 points as the seventh grade boys placed eighth with 33 points.
In the combined team race, the Wayne eighth grade girls and boys placed first with 171 combined points while the Wayne seventh grade girls and boys totaled 120 points for third. West Point-Beemer was crowned champion of the seventh grade scores with 193 points.
In the girls division, Howells-Dodge topped Wayne in eighth grade action (109-77) while West Point-Beemer won the seventh grade team race over Fort Calhoun (97-94).
A Wayne Junior High track & field record was broken to lead the girls when eighth grader Tayla Hurner won the 1600-meter run (5:46.52). The previous record was held by Marcella Jurotich (2014) at 5:47.5. Hurner also won the high jump (4’ 7”).
Also in the eighth grade division, Reagan McManigal tied for first in the pole vault (5’ 6”) with nine points and the 4x400 relay of Hurner, Elizabeth Hix, Sienna Lipp and Lilly Redden crossed the line first in 4:45.05.
Seventh grader Penelope Zavada Cupp won the 100-meter dash (13.59), the 200-meter dash (29.64) and the 100-meter hurdles (18.76) as Hadley Dunklau won the 1600-meter run (6:13.38).
Other eighth grade results came from Hurner during a silver medal in the 800-meter run (2:33.18).
Sienna Lipp tied with Elizabeth Hix for second in the high jump (4’ 4”); Hix also finished fifth in the 1600-meter run (6:55.21) as Lipp placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:11.35).
Lilly Redden finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:47.86); Zoe Bolles took fourth in the pole vault (5’); Alex Ziska claimed fourth in the discus (73’ 8”) and Reagan Heithold captured a sixth place medal in the shot put (25’ 6”).
Other seventh grade results were posted by Sadi Fredrickson in runner-up during the pole vault (5’6”) along with Lorelai Sorenson who tied for third (5’ 6”).
Rose Kaup placed fourth in the 800-meter run (2:55.08) followed by teammate Sarah Kuchta in fifth (2:56.79). Kuchta took third in the 1600-meter run (6:26.13) followed by Kaup in fourth (6:29.77).
Addy Hayes tied for fourth in the high jump (4’ 2”) and Chloe Kai took sixth in the long jump (13’ 1”).
In relays, the 4×100 of Addy Hayes, Lorelai Sorenson, Sadi Fredrickson and Zavada Cupp placed runner-up (57.94) and the 4×400 of Chloe Kai, Kuchta, Kaup and Dunklau finished third (4:57.99).
During the boys division, Wayne held off West Point-Beemer in eighth grade action, 94-80 as West Point-Beemer won the seventh grade team race over Oakland-Craig (96-77).
Top Wayne junior high results were led by eighth grader Chase Rethwisch who won the triple jump (34’ 3 ½”) along with multiple points in the triple and high jump, shot put and pole vault events.
Other eighth grade results came from silver medals by Jacob Fehringer during the 800-meter run (2:34.33), Chase Rethwisch in the long jump (15’ 5 3/4”), Colston Starzl during the triple jump (32’ 8”); Cash Tili in the shot put (35’ 5 ½”) and Remyngton Rager in the discus (98’ 4”).
Fehringer also placed third in the 1600-meter run (5:36.02).
Wayne eighth grade took three spots in the high jump led by a runner-up finish from Logan Walling (5’ 2”), followed by Colston Starzl in third (5’) and Brayden Stegemann in fourth (5’). Stegemann also placed fourth in the triple jump (31’ 4 ½”).
Logan Walling placed third in the discus (95’ 10 ¾”) as Mason Kramer took fourth in the pole vault (7’ 6”) while Clifton Kaup and Kash Haase both tied for sixth in the pole vault (6’ 6”).
In relay action, the 4×100 of Colston Starzl, Logan Walling, Jacob Francis and Mason Kramer placed fourth (54.09) and the 4×400 of Kash Haase, Clifton Kaup, Gerson Torres and Jacob Fehringer took sixth (4:49.38).
Other seventh grade results were posted by second place finishes from Evan Bose in the 100-meter dash (13.49) and Hudson Willrich during the 100-meter hurdles (18.82).
Louie Severson finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (20.36) and tied for fourth in the high jump (4’ 10”) as Mason Wendte placed sixth in the long jump (13’ 5”) and Zaven Jurgensen took sixth in the shot put (28’ 8”).
In relays, the 4×100 of Willrich, Severson, Bose and Mason Wendte finished third (56.05) and the 4×400 of Benjamin Patefield, Owen Avery, Willrich and Bose placed fifth (4:51.6).
