The new school year is not far away, and back-to-school expenses can be challenging for many families.
The Wayne Extension Unit of the Salvation Army is sponsoring a Back-to-School Supply Project which offers Wayne students in grades K-8 a variety of school supplies and a backpack free of charge. The project helps meet the needs of families and children by providing numerous, but not all, needed school supplies. The event now in its fifth year usually helps around 100 children get the supplies they need.
Pastor Teresa Bartlett, Chair of the Wayne Salvation Army Unit said, “Caring for those in need in our community is why the Wayne Salvation Army Extension Unit exists.”
The Salvation Army uses funds raised from summer fundraising events with Wayne restaurants — Pizza Hut and Runza — for the school supply project. The Salvation Army also receives support from the Wayne Community Chest.
This year the Wayne Salvation Army Unit was pleased and grateful to receive a grant from the Wayne Area Legacy Fund. These funds are in addition to the annual Red Kettle Campaign in November and December.
Distribution of the supplies and backpacks will be Monday, Aug. 12 at First Presbyterian Church from 5 to 7 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Those attending are asked to please use the northwest door for entry.
Supplies are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis.
