You have to go back to the 2001 season to find a start this hot for the Wayne State women’s soccer team.
Facing three tough road games in four days to start the season, the Wildcats finished off the trifecta Wednesday with an impressive 2-0 shutout of in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney to move to 3-0 on the season heading into their first Northern Sun Conference game this weekend.
"The credit goes to our girls for fighting through fatigue and different lineups on this long road trip," coach Bruce Erickson said after the win. “We got contributions from everyone which was key in winning."
Wayne State scored midway through the first half on a shot by Samantha Phillips, who hit from the far right corner for her second goal of the season to give the Wildcats a 1-0 halftime advantage.
Wayne State would get an insurance goal in the 75th minute when Carys Hund’s header in the 75th minute found the back of the net, and the Wildcats would get Kylie Comba’s first shutout of the season in goal, which included eight saves, to go on to the victory.
UNK outshot the Wildcats 14-9 with both teams notching eight shots on goal. The fouls were even at 12 apiece, with UNK having a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Phillips, Hund and Kelsey Engstrom each had two shots on goal for the undefeated Wildcats, while Sophie Ketchmark, Natalie Rech and Valarie Hernandez also had shots.
The Wildcats come home for their fourth game in a week’s time, opening the NSIC calendar Friday for a 5 p.m. matchup with preseason conference favorite Augustana at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
