Following a day in-between competition, the Wayne State College men’s and women’s basketball teams began four in a row at home over the weekend.
From Rice Auditorium, WSC welcomed Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday.
The Wayne State College men suffered a 77-60 loss to Concordia-St. Paul (receiving votes just outside top 25) while the Wildcat women lost 69-58 against t-14th CSP.
In the men’s game, Concordia-St. Paul built a 46-28 first half lead and led at-most by 28 points in the second half. WSC won the second half, 32-31. Final favored Concordia-St. Paul (RV) winning 77-60 to improve to 18-6 (13-5 NSIC) to win back-to-back as Wayne State College dropped their second straight falling to 14-10 (8-10 NSIC).
Earlier this season, CSP won 85-79 in St. Paul, MN on December 13.
All five starters hit double figures for Wayne State College led by sophomore JJ Ferrin (6-13 FG/1-5 3PT/2-2 FT) with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals; followed by fifth-year senior Jay Saunders (6-17 FG/1-3 3PT) with 13 points, one rebound, one assist and three steals as 11-point scoring came from junior transfer Kai Smith (3-7 FG/1-3 3PT/4-4 FT) with four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block along with freshman Matt Noll (5-8 FG/0-1 3PT/1-5 FT) with four rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocks.
Fifth-year senior Cody McCullough (3-11 FG/4-4 FT) rounded out the scoring with 10 points, eight rebounds, one assist and two blocks (102 in career moving into third in program history).
The Wildcats shot 23-68 (33.8%) from the field, 3-17 (17.6%) from the three-point line and 11-15 (73.3%) at the foul line.
Concordia-St. Paul leaders were Antwan Kimmons with 22 points, Cade Meyer recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Reid Patterson added 15 points.
The Golden Bears finished 28-61 (45.9%) from the floor, 8-20 (40%) from behind the arc and 13-16 (81.3%) from the charity stripe.
Concordia-St. Paul out rebounded Wayne State College, 44 to 36 including 9 – 12 offensively which led to 12 second chance points compared to 10 points for the Cats. WSC scored nine points off of 14 Golden Bear turnovers while CSP scored eight points off of nine Wildcat turnovers.
Concordia-St. Paul won the battle in the paint (34-28), fast break scoring (15-10) and bench scoring (10-0).
During the women’s outing, Concordia-St. Paul led 18-10 after the opening quarter followed by a 19-17 advantage to put the Golden Bears up 37-27. Wayne State College won the third quarter, 18-16 as CSP won the fourth, 16-13. Final favored Concordia-St. Paul (t-14th) winning their ninth straight thanks to a 69-58 victory to improve to 22-2 (16-2 NSIC) as WSC dropped their second straight falling to 10-12 (7-11 NSIC).
Earlier this season, the Golden Bears won 75-62 in St. Paul, MN on December 13.
Wayne State College was led in scoring by senior Maya Fitzpatrick (9-17 FG/3-8 3PT) with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks as junior Meg Rietz (4-6 FG/1-2 3PT) added nine points, three rebounds, two assists and one block.
Other scoring came from senior Delaney Clark (one rebound/one assist) with eight points, senior Tate Norblade (five rebounds/six assists/two steals/one block) followed with six points, senior Carsyn Boswell (two rebounds) tallied five points, junior Kylah VanDonkersgoed (seven rebounds/two steals/one block) tacked on four points, sophomore Brooklyn Kruse (two rebounds/one steal) scored three points as freshman Emma Frost (one rebound/one block) finished with two points.
The Wildcats shot 24-58 (41.4%) from the field, 7-24 (29.2%) from the three-point line and 3-7 (42.9%) at the foul line.
Concordia-St. Paul leaders were Lydia Haack with 20 points, Julia Bengtson added 15 points as Lindsey Becher followed with 13 points and four blocks.
The Golden Bears finished 25-52 (48.1%) from the floor, 6-14 (42.9%) from behind the arc and 13-17 (76.5%) from the charity stripe.
Concordia-St. Paul out rebounded Wayne State College, 37 to 30 including 8 – 9 offensively which led to eight second chance points compared to four points for the Cats. WSC scored 12 points off of nine Golden Bear turnovers while CSP scored 12 points off of 10 Wildcat turnovers.
Concordia-St. Paul won the battle in the paint (30-28) and fast break scoring (11-9) as both teams recorded 13 points off the bench.
