A third Wayne State College spring sport began spring break over the weekend as the Russ Matt Baseball Invite showcased the Wildcats.
From Daytona Beach, Florida, WSC was in action on Saturday taking on Embry-Riddle University (FL).
An eight-run sixth propelled Embry-Riddle to a 14-0 shutout victory over Wayne State College.
During the lone nine-inning outing, Wayne State College was held to just five hits.
Embry-Riddle began with a run in the home half of the first inning followed by a three-run second. Following a scoreless third, Embry-Riddle drove in two runs during the fourth and closed scoring with eight runs in the sixth to win 14-0 and record 13 hits. Embry-Riddle committed one error compared to zero errors by WSC.
Sophomore Max Heard and senior Kaden Young both singled and doubled as junior Casey Prychak doubled.
Senior Jackson Shelburne (63 pitches) suffered the loss in three and two-thirds allowing six earned runs off seven hits while striking out three batters, walking one and hitting one. Redshirt freshman Brooke Kneifl (31) followed with an inning and a third allowing one hit while striking out one batter and walking two.
Sophomore Braden Sweet (18) worked a third of an inning allowing four earned runs off two hits while striking out one batter and hitting two. Sophomore Kyler Hanson (46) came in for an inning and two-thirds allowing four earned runs off three hits while striking out one batter, walking two and hitting one. Junior Adam Eggert (18) closed out the final inning striking out two batters.
