With rising measles cases, bird flu outbreaks, and growing concerns about air and water quality, public health is more vital than ever.
The Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department (NNPHD) is addressing these challenges by expanding services for over 30,000 residents in Cedar, Dixon, Thurston, and Wayne counties. To support this effort, NNPHD is moving into a new building on the west side of town near Evolving Eyecare and First Family Dental.
A Bigger, Better Space
Public health helps prevent diseases, promotes wellness, and ensures access to essential care. National Public Health Week (April 7–13) highlights the critical work of public health professionals. NNPHD’s new facility will provide more space for clinical care and drive-through clinics, making services more accessible and efficient.
“Our team is excited about the opportunities this new space brings,” said Executive Health Director Colleen Hupke. “We can expand clinical services, offer more wellness programs, and better support the community.”
Expanded Clinical Services
NNPHD’s new location will enhance several key health programs:
• Community Oral Health Clinics – Provided 4,000 preventive dental visits in schools, daycares, and assisted living facilities last year. The new space will allow more in-office care.
• STI and HIV Testing – Offers confidential testing and resources.
• Diabetes on Track – A free program with A1C screenings and weight management support.
• Colon Rectal Cancer Screening Program – In partnership with Nebraska DHHS for early detection and prevention. Over 100 test kits give out since we started last fall.
Disease Investigation
NNPHD’s Disease Investigation and Surveillance (DIS) Team tracks and responds to local health threats, including mumps, zoonotic tuberculosis, and bird flu. The team played a key role in handling the COVID-19 pandemic and Nebraska’s first confirmed Lyme disease cases.
Emergency Response
NNPHD also leads emergency response efforts for disasters such as floods and tornadoes. JJ Jackson, the new Emergency Response Coordinator, urges families and businesses to prepare for emergencies. For guidance, call 402-375-2200.
Prevention & Mental Health Programs
• CATCH My Breath – Educated 600+ students in our district on vaping risks.
• Fatal Vision – Uses goggles to demonstrate alcohol’s impact on coordination and judgment.
• WRAP Mental Health Program – Helps individuals develop wellness plans.
Environmental Health
Initiatives
NNPHD works to ensure a safe environment by:
• Reducing elevated blood lead levels in children.
• Promoting drinking water safety in private wells and schools.
• Providing radon testing and education.
• Monitoring air quality and mosquito populations for diseases like West Nile Virus.
• Testing ticks for Lyme disease and other illnesses.
The Future of Public Health
NNPHD’s Community Health Workers play a crucial role in keeping residents healthy. With the new facility and expanded services, NNPHD remains committed to improving public health in Northeast Nebraska.
