Winside State Bank robbed Sunday; $2,380 missing

Unknown burglars broke into the Winside State Bank Saturday night and stole $2,380.00 in coins.

The robbers gained entrance to the bank by breaking through the back door, probably with a crowbar.

They then used the same instrument to pry open the lock to Bank President E. T. Warnemunde's office.

Once inside the office, they used a hammer and chisel to knock a hole in the vault walls, each six inches thick with an air space between.

Only coins were taken. Currency is kept in a time locked safe in the lighted front of the bank.

Forty five dollars in pennies were left. Law authorities theorized the pennies probably added too much weight to the loot for the burglars to carry.

FBI officials disallowed rumor Wednesday noon that suspects of the robbery had been reported fleeing in a rose-colored automobile.

No new developments in the case were reported at press time Wednesday. Warnemunde said the bank deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and in addition, the bank carries burglary insurance on its safety deposit boxes.
